A Practical Framework for Growing a Stronger Family Business

The Problem

Most Family Businesses Don't Fail Because of Strategy

They struggle because leadership, systems, and family dynamics fall out of alignment. One generation built the company through grit and intuition. The next generation inherits a business that now needs clearer roles, better systems, stronger leadership development, and more disciplined execution.

That's where the 7Ps Playbook comes in. It is a practical framework used with family-owned businesses to align leadership, strategy, and execution so the company can grow without destroying family relationships or the founder's legacy.

Professional sports teams have playbooks. Military units have playbooks. Successful companies need them too. Without one, businesses rely on tribal knowledge and founder intuition — which becomes a bottleneck as the business grows or transitions to the next generation.

The Framework

The 7Ps Framework

The seven core drivers of every successful family enterprise. When these are aligned, companies grow faster, operate more smoothly, and develop stronger leaders.

01

Purpose

Great businesses start with clarity about why they exist — vision, core values, family mission, and alignment between the family and the business. Purpose is the long-term compass that guides decisions.

02

Planning

Many companies operate reactively instead of strategically. Planning ensures leadership teams answer the right questions: long-term goals, 90-day priorities, and issues that must be solved now.

03

Products

Even great companies lose momentum if they stop evaluating their market position. Target customers, competitive differentiation, pricing, profitability, and feedback loops with the market.

04

People

In family businesses, the people dimension is both the greatest asset and the greatest challenge. Right people in the right seats, next-gen development, and managing family relationships in the workplace.

05

Priorities

Most companies attempt to do too many things at once. 90-day priorities, leadership scorecards, weekly meetings, and issue solving. Execution improves dramatically when everyone knows what matters most.

06

Processes

Growing companies must transition from founder-driven decision making to clear, repeatable systems. Documented processes, standard operating procedures, accountability structures, and operating rhythms.

07

Performance

Ultimately, a healthy business must produce strong financial results. Financial scorecards, key performance indicators, profitability benchmarks, and cash flow discipline ensure leadership teams make decisions based on data, not emotion.

Diagnostic Tool

The 7Ps Business Health Scorecard

To help companies evaluate where they stand, Jonathan developed the Goldhill 7Ps Scorecard — a diagnostic tool used with leadership teams and family businesses to identify strengths and gaps across all seven areas. Many leaders find that simply reviewing the scorecard reveals issues they have been sensing for years but never addressed systematically.
